The Paradox of the Stone

If you accept the notion that God is omnipotent then you accept that God can do anything. So…

Could God create a stone so heavy that even he could not lift it?

If yes, then he is not omnipotent because he cannot lift the stone.
If no, then he is not omnipotent because he cannot create the stone.

The theist must accept that God is either not omnipotent or is confined by the rules of logic. Most theists would prefer to accept the latter. A theist would be willing to accept that God cannot create a round square or make 2+2=5, and they would categorize the stone in the paradox above as a similar logical impossibility. However, confining God to work within the boundaries of logical possibility leads to a slippery slope. For example, Noah’s ark, the virgin birth, and Christ’s resurrection are all logically impossible. In fact, many fundamental principles of religion are logical impossibilities. This is why theists place such a heavy emphasis on religious faith. Faith is the only way one can take religion seriously and ignore the glaring logical inconsistencies.
